How to Generate Reports

     Various backup reports are provided by ITC via this Web site to allow system administrators to be aware of how and when filesystems on their machines are being backed up. Select one of the following report types:

• Machine names lists the names of client machines.

• Status of machines lists the status of client machines. Normal status is indicated by ok. Status of out indicates that no new backups are being generated, and is usually accompanied by the date when the client was removed from the backup cycle and the reason for removal.

• Names of filesystems lists the names of filesystems by client machine.

• Status of filesystems lists the status of filesystems by client machine. Possible status values are:

  Idle	No backup currently running.
  Active	A backup is running. The last several messages relating to backup progress are displayed.
  out	No new backups are being generated. Usually accompanied by the date when the filesystem was removed from the backup cycle and the reason for removal. If a client machine is in out status, all its filesystems are also in out status.

• Backups of filesystems lists existing backups of filesystems by client machine, one per line. Here's a sample for a fictitious client named "zertx.dom.virginia.edu":

  For the sake of brevity, only the least portions of a client's full domain name are displayed which still guarantee unambiguity. "zertx" is displayed above, rather than "zertx.dom.virginia.edu", since backups for only one "zertx" exist. If backups for "zertx.itc.virginia.edu" also existed, entries for "zertx.itc" as well as "zertx.dom" would appear (if options to list backups for both had been selected).

  The fields of general interest are:

  M:Fs	Client machine and filesystem
  Start Time	Date and time that the backup started
  Level	0 means a full dump, otherwise incremental
  Kb	Size of the backup in kilobytes
  Rp	Retention period in days

     After the type of report has been selected, select one of the following methods of specifying which machines to run a report for:

All - All machines configured into the backup system. All in a specified domain - A menu of possible domains is presented. Select one or more domains.   Domain here refers to the second element in the full domain name of a machine, after ".virginia.edu" has been stripped off. For example, the domain for "zertx.dom.virginia.edu" is "dom", and for "uzertx.virginia.edu" is a null string, represented in the menu by "NULL". A report is run for all machines in the specified domains. Individual machines - A menu of possible machine names is presented. Select one or more machine names.

     When making multiple selections from menus, you may have to depress the Control key while clicking items, if you are using an Internet Explorer or Netscape browser on a Windows platform.
